Zen
sitting meditation, the core of zen practice, is called zazen in
Japanese. During zazen, practitioners usually assume a sitting position
such as the lotus or half-lotus. Awareness is directed towards one's
posture and breathing. A round cushion, zafu, placed on a padded mat,
zabuton, is used to sit on; in some cases, a chair may be used.
The zazen periods at Clear Mountain Zen Center are thirty minutes each, with a ten-minute kinhin (walking meditation) between. Cushions and chairs are provided for zazen.
After meditation, tea is served and questions and discussion follow.
Introductory
classes, though not necessary to attend the regularly scheduled
sittings, are a good way to learn about the practice. Classes are held
every Sunday morning before the regular sitting, at 7:30am. If you would like to
